Soledad Ramirez Roses

April 20, 1928 - August 31, 2020

Soledad Ramirez Roses (Nanay) has left us to join our Lord and Tatay on Monday, August 31, 2020, she was 92. She was born on April 20, 1928 at Malagasang, Imus, Cavite, Philippines. She grew up in rural Imus and later moved to Cavite City. She was around 13 when WWII started and her father, Luciano a U.S. Navy retiree, was arrested, tortured and eventually executed, for being a U.S. spy. She told stories about watching aerial dogfights above her, playing chess with Japanese Officers and delivering messages for the guerrilla resistance. After the war, as the eldest, she helped raise her siblings while her widowed mother earned money. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. During a “USO” type dance, she met her love, Tatay Peping, got married and had four kids. While Peping was in the Navy she worked as a Navy Training Officer. Unfortunately, Tatay died of cancer at the age of 39 in 1965. Tatay and Nanay had dreamed of moving to the U.S. to give their kids the best opportunities; to fulfill this dream, she immigrated to the USA. As a single mom, she worked multiple (2-3) jobs to provide the best for her children: full time during the day and part time on evenings and weekends. She worked as a clerk, administrative assistant, and research assistant at various places: University of Michigan, School of Engineering, Ann Arbor University Hospital, San Francisco Insurance, Hines Laboratories, and University of California San Francisco Pathology Department (UCSF). She retired from full time work at UCSF to care for her mother Socorro (Lola) until Lola passed away in 1986. She grew up Catholic and later converted to be a Mormon (Latter Day Saints or LDS). She loved music and playing piano; she also played for LDS Sunday Services. She loved baking, cake decorating, and shopping. She loved her children, relatives, friends and co-workers. Everyone loved Nanay and respected her. She was a strong hard-working woman with many admirable qualities: humble & down to earth simple, always honest, generous, patient (rarely complaining) and always happy with a great smile. She is survived by four children: Gerardo and wife Cheryl, Sunny and husband Alex, Ron and wife Karen, Rick and wife Carina; fourteen grandchildren: Gerry and wife Tessa, Katrina and husband David, Bryan, Elizabeth and husband Jared, Jared and wife Sophia, Jasmine and husband Brian, Alex and wife Joanna, Jacqueline and husband Dave Jr, Michelle and husband Adam, Joseph and wife Ana, Mikey, Robert, Samantha, and Jaime; twenty one great-grandchildren: Arianna, Riley-Anne, Nicholas, Laci-Claire, Luke, Connor, Zachary, Elena, Ethan, Marisa, Isabelle, Kaitlyn, Anthony, Rosalie, Natalie, Zea, Dalisay, Mila, Isaiah, Kylie, and Emery; and her siblings Erlinda, Dante, Leticia, and Percival. Soledad was preceded in death by her husband, Jose (Tatay Peping) Roses, her sister Amelia Basco, and her parents, Socorro and Luciano Ramirez.
