Charles Hillery Barnes Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Charles Hillery Barnes, 89, of Vacaville, California, died May 21, 2022. He was born in Elko, Nevada January 9, 1933 and graduated from Salinas Union High School 1950. He attended the University of California at Davis, receiving a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1958. He married Patricia Marie Stoll June 13, 1959. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962 and later in the Army Reserves. In 1962 he went to work at the Animal Care Center in Vacaville as a veterinarian where he continued to practice for over 50 years. He was active in his community, serving as a member and president of the Kiwanis Club of Vacaville for decades. He served on the Library Board while they planned the new library on Merchant Street, constructed in 1970. With his wife Pat, he journeyed to England, Scotland, France, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Egypt, Israel, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Their last long trip together was to Cornwall to visit friends they made on their trip to New Zealand. Dr. Barnes retired in 2008, although he kept his hand in the work of the Animal Care Center for several years afterward. He gave out his booklet, All Things Brown and Shiny (a realistic nod to James Herriott’s All Creatures Great and Small) at his retirement party. He spent his retirement traveling and puttering around his house and garden on Alamo Creek. His last trip was in March, to the Grand Canyon with his daughter Carolyn. He was predeceased by his mother, Alberta Barnes, his father Hillery Barnes; his aunt Mary Violini and his uncle Joseph Violini; his aunts Gladys and Martha; his uncles Henry, Jim, and Bill; his brother Warner Barnes; and his beloved wife Patricia Marie Barnes. He is survived by his children, Susan Barnes and husband Mike Ferguson of Louisville, KY; Carolyn Henninger and husband Steve Henninger of Corning, CA; Julie Barnes of Suisun; his grandchildren, Lucas Ferguson of Billings, MT and Eleanor Ferguson of Louisville, KY; his brother Harvey Barnes and wife Suzy Barnes; nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, and cherished family friends. A memorial service for Dr. Charles Barnes will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2022, at 570 Coventry Court, Vacaville, on the bank of Alamo Creek.
